A Brief History of the Damier Print

Katherine Cope

Did you know that the classic Damier print is actually older than Monogram?!

Damier was first created by Louis Vuitton himself in 1888 and introduced a year later in 1889 when it was presented at the Paris Exposition Universelle, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.

The first time Louis Vuitton patented one of his designs was with this Damier print, with the registered trademark written diagonally across one of the checkerboard squares.

The Damier print was used for over a decade to cover hatboxes, wardrobes, trunks, and luggage. It was then reintroduced in 1996 as Damier Ebene, and is one of the staple lines used to this day.
